New Post: emulating StringFormat behaviour

Hi all,

I need to localize the format of a dynamic string, much like StringFormat does in bindings. I've looked around and I've found a few threads on this topic, all of which said that this was impossible to do directly because bindings are not DependencyObjects, which is reasonable. Some workaround are proposed, all of which seem a bit clunky.

That said, there is another localisation library on codeproject (http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/249369/Advanced-WPF-Localization) which has other issues but, on this topic, manages to do something very close to a binding's StringFormat. It has a LocBinding extension which, while not actually being a binding, in practice behaves exactly like a MultiBinding, except that it takes a resource key instead of a StringFormat. It's a much more elegant solution than all the workarounds I've found so far. Unfortunately, I do not have sufficient knowledge of the guts of the dependency property system to understand how this works, but it works.

Now, all the threads I've found on the topic are fairly old, so I'm wondering whether in the mean time, a similar solution has been implemented in WPF Localization Extension, or if it hasn't, if there are any plans for it.

Can we force to use the ResxProvider at design time? Or maybe to copy the csv to its temporary folder? I am facing the same issue here :)

Is it possible to load the resx file at runtime? I have an application that is getting .resx file and I would like to load it at runtime.
I checked some old discussions, but I didn't understand if it is already implemented.

The code behind binding throws an exception in Silverlight:

Attempt by method 'SLLocalizeExtension.Extensions.LocExtension.SetBinding(System.Object, System.Object, Int32)' to access field 'System.Windows.DependencyProperty._propertyType' failed.

in LocExtension.cs line 730.

I am using windows8 and vs2012.

My code is

TextBlock tt = new TextBlock();
LocExtension lex = new LocExtension("SRCommon:SRCommon:Modul_XXX");
lex.SetBinding(tt, TextBlock.TextProperty);

Hello!

We have a largish-scale MVVM application with one shell window which hosts multiple views. In each of these views we use the WPF Localization Extension to provide the strings. Otherwise everything is working fine, but sometimes if we navigate intensively between views, the application will crash with the standard "Application has stopped working."

From the Windows Event Log, we can see the following stack trace:

We are uncertain if this is a known issue with the extension. The version we use is v2.1.3 from NuGet, with XAML Markup Extension version 1.1.6.1, also from NuGet.

If required, we should be able to compile a debug version of the extension and try to provide a more accurate location for the crash, if the above trace is not sufficient. We cannot provide any source code or any usage samples since it is a proprietary application, but we will do anything else we can to help resolving this.
Comments: Hello, I took a copy of the latest source code, but after compiling and copying the assembly into our output directory, the application does not even start. Apparently the "SetCurrentThreadCulture" property has been removed. Commenting out this line, I do get a little bit forward, but then another crash occurs, complaining that a method or operation is not implemented. Apparently the source code available from the top toolbar is not in sync with the NuGet package, or there's a version conflict. Also, I could not obtain the XAML Markup Extensions' package's source code at all, the repository of the project here on CodePlex only contains the BuildProcessTemplates, and no actual source. How should we proceed if we want to provide you with a more detailed debug log? Also, are we using an outdated version of the extension since from what I can see, the current source code does not even contain the LocExtension class referred to in the stack trace?

Hello Uwe,

Sorry if I did not express me the right way. BOTH Languages I am currently using are working at design time. I can switch between them, no problem. BUT...
To me it looks, as if a snapshot of the resources is made at startup and this snapshot is not updated when resx is changed. I mean, as soon as I add a new entry to my resx file and then use it in xaml the designer shows a empty string as you can see it in the mentioned screenshot. To get the new resx entries to work, I have to shutdown VS and restart it.

this issue is related to the general design time issue. The designer does not copy the CSV file to its temporary folder during design time.

Hi Rainer,

at least one language (to be exact: the language of the first satellite assembly, when sorted alphabetically) should also work at designtime. Nevertheless the designtime is not working properly due to a strange behavior of the VS2012 designer (see also this thread). This issue is still open.

I've my own application, where I need to use csv files as my localization resources. I can't make sample CSVLocalizationProvider to work in design mode. Project is set as startup. Everything is ok in runtime.

Hi Uwe,

it seems to be only a designtime issue. If I edit my textes in the resx file and run the app, the changes are shown. Stopping the program and returning to the designer, the text field is still empty as shown in the screenshot at:

is this a runtime or designtime issue or both?

If it is just a design time issue, please be patient, because starting with VS2012 the designer does not react properly to the setting of the DesignCulture property.

Hi,

I just started to learn WPF Localization Extensions.
My environment :

VS2012
WPF application

The problem I have right now, that if I change my resource string in the resx file, this does not get reflected in my designer view. Even if I rebuild my whole solution this is the case. In oder to see the changes I need to close VS and reopen it.
Is this a known issue, or am I doing things wrong?

The key name should be displayed, if no resource was found for the chosen language.
This applies only to localized texts
Comments: An extension to this would be to externalize a handler for missing key case, or missing content case. Such a handler could be used to automatically create the key in the external storage that is used initially to provide the key-content resources.

I found a Solution, I implemented my own Localizeable Dictionary, but the Promblem I now had was that it did not work in VS2010 because it does not support Markup Extensions!

Hi,

for runtime I yould suggest setting it in the App class during startup. For designtime you'll have to implement it in each form unfortunately, because the designer only looks at this particular instance (as far as I know).
